Procedure Overview & Clinical Purpose

Pleural effusion involves abnormal accumulation of fluid around the lungs, leading to severe compressive breathlessness, chest pain, and hypoxemia. Dr. Kashyap performs precision ultrasound-guided thoracentesis and micro-pigtail catheter insertion at the bedside, safely draining fluid for immediate lung re-expansion while sending samples for definitive biochemical and microbiological analysis.

When Is This Procedure Indicated?

Key Patient Candidates & Symptoms

Sudden or progressive breathlessness with fluid visible on chest X-ray or ultrasound
Pleuritic chest pain aggravated by deep breathing or coughing
Suspicion of tubercular, parapneumonic, or malignant pleural fluid collections
Massive fluid accumulation causing mediastinal shift and oxygen desaturation
Step-by-Step Clinical Journey

What Happens During the Procedure?

1

Bedside Ultrasound Mapping

High-resolution thoracic ultrasound identifies safest needle entry pocket, avoiding intercostal vessels.

2

Local Anesthetic Numbing

Chest wall skin and parietal pleura are completely numbed with local anesthetic for zero pain.

3

Gentle Fluid Aspiration / Catheter Drain

Excess fluid is safely evacuated into vacuum containers, allowing compressed lung tissue to re-expand.

4

Diagnostic Lab Profiling & Follow-up X-Ray

Fluid is analyzed for proteins, ADA, microbiology, and cytology to determine etiology.
