Procedure Overview & Clinical Purpose

Pulmonary Function Testing (PFT) with DLCO gas diffusion is an essential non-invasive diagnostic battery that quantifies lung mechanics, airway obstruction reversibility, and gas exchange efficiency across alveolar-capillary membranes. It is crucial for distinguishing Asthma from COPD and monitoring treatment response in Interstitial Lung Diseases (ILD).

When Is This Procedure Indicated?

Key Patient Candidates & Symptoms

Unexplained shortness of breath on exertion, climbing stairs, or walking
Chronic wheezing, chest tightness, or seasonal breathing difficulties
Evaluation of lung involvement in systemic autoimmune diseases (Rheumatoid, Scleroderma)
Monitoring therapeutic efficacy of inhaled bronchodilators and anti-fibrotic drugs
Pre-operative respiratory risk assessment prior to major abdominal or cardiac surgery
Step-by-Step Clinical Journey

What Happens During the Procedure?

1

Nose Clip & Mouthpiece Setup

Soft nose clip is placed and sterile bacterial filter mouthpiece is positioned between lips.

2

Baseline Spirometry Maneuver

Patient takes maximum inhalation followed by forceful, rapid blast exhalation for 6 seconds.

3

Bronchodilator Reversibility Test

A rapid-acting bronchodilator puff is administered, and test is repeated after 15 mins to check reversibility.

4

DLCO Single-Breath Gas Diffusion

Single breath-hold maneuver calculates exact carbon monoxide diffusion capacity across lung membranes.

Preparation Instructions

How to Prepare Before Coming to the Hospital

  • Hold short-acting relief inhalers (Levolin/Asthalin) for 4-6 hours before testing if advised
  • Avoid smoking or heavy meals for 2 hours prior to the test
  • Wear loose-fitting comfortable clothing around chest and waist
